Within the Correctional Service Division, the

Custody Operations Branch operates ten custodial centres across the province for adult and youth corrections. Correctional Peace Officers perform security and supervision functions in these centres to ensure the care, custody and control of inmates/young persons.

A limited number of Correctional Peace Officer roles may also be available at youth attendance centres operated by Alberta Corrections' Community Corrections Branch.

Role

As a Correctional Peace Officer, you will be a valued member of a team that is essential to maintaining the safety and security of a centre. You will perform a variety of security functions to ensure the care and custody of offenders while also ensuring the safety of centre staff and the public. In this environment, you will monitor inmate movement, conduct patrols and counts, manage behaviour, complete searches and complete administrative duties associated with the Correctional Peace Officer role, including report writing and data entry. You will work directly with inmates to provide support and guidance and act as a positive role model.

You will be highly motivated to work with inmates and thrive in a demanding and stressful work environment. Well-developed interpersonal skills, sound judgment and a professional demeanor are essential to this position. You must have the ability to function effectively in a team environment and possess critical thinking skills. Well-developed verbal and written communication, along with basic computer skills are necessary to ensure success in this position. Proven leadership skills and the ability to manage conflicts effectively are also essential.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma plus a minimum of two years of related experience (equivalencies will be considered on the basis of 1 year of experience for 1 year of education or 1 year of education for 1 year of experience)
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level-C Certification with automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Current Certified Criminal Records Check (with fingerprints and issued within the last six months)
  • Young Offenders Centres will require a current Certified Criminal Records Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check (issued within the last six months)
  • Experience managing conflict and de-escalation
  • Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Candidates must possess a minimum of a current valid Class 5 Canadian Driver's License (please note: Probationary Class 5-Graduated Driver's License (GDL) or Learners will not be accepted)
  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada

Assets:

  • Previous experience as a Correctional Peace Officer or Correctional Service Worker
  • Previous experience as a police officer or auxiliary police member
  • Previous experience in client group work (e.g. group homes, aboriginal camps)
  • Previous experience working with adults with mental health or behavioural issues
  • Previous experience in security, where the role regularly requires direct contact with the public (e.g. mall security, hospital security, airport screening officer, loss prevention officer, commissionaire, armed guard, etc.)
  • Previous experience in bylaw enforcement
  • Previous military service with focus on protection or security
  • Previous experience in emergency response (e.g. EMT; firefighter)
  • Previous experience working with youth in areas such as: Working under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act, Working with youth in an education setting, Providing services to youth with disabilities, Youth mentorship, Youth counselling service, and/or working in a youth group home

Notes

  • This competition will be used to create an eligibility list of qualified candidates to fill upcoming opportunities. Candidates who are successful in the selection process will be placed in a Talent Pool.
  • The number of positions to be filled has not been identified at this time as vacancies in various locations will vary.
  • Vacancies may be Permanent or Wage. Permanent positions are generally offered only on a full-time basis, with candidates required to be available for a variety of shifts: days, afternoons, nights, including weekends and holidays.
  • Wage positions are offered on a casual/on-call basis with no guarantee of hours. Successful candidates may at times receive shifts on short notice. A successful candidate could be working full-time hours or have no shifts depending on the week. Shifts vary based on the Centre's needs.
  • As part of the recruitment process, successful candidates will be required to attend multiple interviews and complete an orientation session held over several days at the Centre where they will be employed.
  • Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening.
  • Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks and any costs related to interview travel will be the responsibility of the candidate. (Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.)
