Job Description

About PL

Paper Leaf is an award-winning digital product design firm located in Edmonton, AB. We design & develop innovative custom web applications, mobile applications and websites – and we are looking to add a full-time Web Developer to our team to help us do that. We have a fun, relaxed & flexible environment that’s actually organized; a tight-knit team where your voice is heard; a variety of challenging, rewarding, and creative work; and a clear framework for professional development and growth. It’s a good place to be.

We work on projects for clients across the globe, and you'll be working on a team that values high-quality execution – not one that is hellbent on burning you out and churning out as much work as possible. You can learn more about our work on  the Portfolio page , and about our team on  our About page .

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

We believe that diversity in all regards contributes to a broader collective perspective that will consistently improve Paper Leaf and the work we do. We are working hard to increase the diversity of our team wherever we can and we actively encourage everyone to consider becoming a part of it. If you don’t meet one or two of our requirements, but still feel you’d be a good fit, throw your hat in the mix anyway. You miss every shot you don’t take.

We have strong staff involvement in our DEI initiatives, establishing and advocating for progression of Paper Leaf’s processes. These efforts span from establishing equitable hiring practices to ensuring the products we deliver are setting standards for accessibility in our industry.

If you require accommodation measures during any phase of the hiring process, please notify us as soon as possible. All information received in relation to accommodation requests will be kept confidential.

Position Overview

The Web Developer, Ongoing Solutions position is an advanced position and at least 5 years of experience is required. It will involve work like:

  • Operations and maintenance of servers. You’ll work with our DevSecOps team to keep our servers tip-top.
  • Contribute to our development processes. We are always looking to improve, and as you find things that could work better, we want to hear about them.
  • Work on updates and upgrades to our existing sites and applications.
  • Fixes and troubleshooting for both our current and past projects and products. This could be a Laravel upgrade, or fixing up a WordPress plugin update gone wrong. This could also include contributing to current projects and teams.
  • Small projects and adding new functionality to past projects and products. We are constantly working to keep our clients happy. Sometimes they request work that doesn’t make sense for a full team to work on.
  • Monitor security, performance, and other operational metrics. You will work closely with our DevSecOps team to make sure our websites, apps, and products are running smoothly.
  • Problem-solving. Most tasks will not be straightforward.
  • Ability to debug, troubleshoot and identify issues early on.
  • Strong ability to work independently and meet goals and deadlines with minimal direction or guidance. While you’ll be part of one of our teams, a lot of the work will be up to you. There will be support if you need it though.
  • Actively mentor and support less experienced developers.
  • Be part of a rotating, on-call schedule to provide evening/weekend support for critical issues as needed.

We realize the technical expectations are a big ask—we don’t expect you to know or have experience in everything right off the bat. Solid debugging skills and a track record of learning are big assets.

The salary range for this position is $70,000 - $85,000 depending on experience and qualifications.

Required Skills

To be considered for the position, here’s what you’ll have:

  • 5+ years of development experience in web technologies. We work in PHP primarily.
  • Server management experience (LEMP stack).
  • Experience with Git.
  • A degree or diploma in a related field is an asset.
  • Experience with Laravel.
  • Experience with WordPress custom themes, plugins, ACF, and block editor.
  • Ability to learn and troubleshoot unfamiliar tech stacks or platforms.

If you don’t meet one or two of these requirements, but still feel you’d be a good fit, throw your hat in the mix anyway.

Recommended Skills

These are nice to have.

  • Experience with JavaScript. Particularly, with React and React Native.
  • Experience with Bootstrap and other CSS frameworks.
  • Estimating and scoping requested work from clients.

What We Offer

This is a full-time, salaried position at an expected range of $70,000-$85,000 per year, dependent on candidate experience. We offer a remote working environment with the option of hybrid; flexible start and end times to your days, and the opportunity for 4-day weeks if you want; a compensation package that includes a competitive salary, benefits and vacation time; unlimited sick days; the opportunity to work on interesting, challenging, and meaningful projects; professional development opportunities; and more.

This is a remote-first position, open to applicants in Canada. The occasional travel and in-person meeting may be required. The estimated in-person requirements for this role is less than 5 days per year.

You will be provided with the technology and equipment necessary to execute your job from home. If you crave an office environment, there are opportunities to work from the offices of  ZGM Modern Marketing Partners , our parent company, in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver.
