Role Description

The Town of Devon is seeking a Casual Recycle Depot Operator to support the operation of the Devon Recycle Depot. Reporting to the Environment & Sustainability Manager, this role is essential in ensuring the safe, organized, and efficient operation of the facility.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the public, supervising site operations, coordinating contracted services, and maintaining a safe, well-organized facility. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with strong customer service skills, self-motivation, and an interest in sustainability and waste diversion.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Customer Service & Public Assistance

  • Provide professional, courteous service to all visitors.
  • Assist customers with safe offloading of recyclable materials.
  • Answer phone calls and respond to inquiries from Town and area residents during operating hours.
  • Educate the public on recycling practices and provide up-to-date information.
  • Address or escalate customer concerns in a timely manner.

Site Supervision & Operations

  • Open and close the facility, securing gates and locks.
  • Collect fees according to the approved schedule and provide receipts.
  • Maintain accurate records of revenue, expenses, and reporting documentation.
  • Schedule and coordinate contracted bin rentals, hauling, and disposal of materials.
  • Ensure the site is safe, clean, and well organized, arranging for contracted services as needed.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Assessments and ensure compliance with OH&S and Town safety standards.

Maintenance & General Duties

  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on site facilities and equipment.
  • Monitor and replace site signage when necessary.
  • Request snow removal, traction materials, or other services to ensure safe public access.
  • Support waste education initiatives and other environmental programs as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean Driver’s Abstract.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Previous experience in solid waste or recycling operations preferred.
  • Health & Safety training (or willingness to obtain).
  • Ability to lift over 50 lbs, use hand tools, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to handle difficult situations calmly and professionally.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and adapt to changing operational needs.
