About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Structural Engineering the Bridge Engineer provides specialized structural and bridge engineering services respecting the design tendering construction and inspection of bridges and other highway structures.

Primary Accountabilities

The primary accountabilities of the Bridge Engineer are:

  • Provide technical expertise in the delivery of structural engineering services related to bridges culverts retaining walls overhead sign structures and other highway related structures.
  • Act as a project manager for structure designs by procuring engineering consulting services prepare terms of reference coordinate proposal reviews award contracts supervise consultants work and approve payment.
  • Coordinate and review bridge surveys geotechnical investigations bridge alignments hydrology/hydraulics analysis reports structure designs archeology reports environmental assessment reports environmental permitting applications and tender documents.
  • Use sound engineering principles and structural/bridge engineering software to prepare structural/bridge designs and coordinate design drawings for bridges and other highway structures.
  • Provide structural/bridge engineering support assistance and advice to department staff and other government agencies.
  • Prepare tender documentation for highway structures projects including design drawings cost estimates quantities and special provisions.
  • Assist and provide guidance to the project engineer during construction by reviewing shop drawings answering questions and completing site inspections as needed.
  • Solve design/construction related issues and make recommendations to the project engineer.
  • Undertake commissioning and warranty inspections for new bridge structures as needed.
  • Apply and obtain permits from regulatory authorities on bridge projects.
  • Consult with Office of Lnu Affairs (OLA) and Department of Communities Culture Tourism & Heritage (CCTH) as per the Aboriginal Consultation Guidelines for bridge projects.
  • This position requires occasional travel throughout the province of Nova Scotia to visit project sites and meet and work collaboratively with other technical staff across the department and Highway Program division.

Qualifications and Experience

You have a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution and are registered with Engineers Nova Scotia (ENS) as an Engineer-in-Training or as Licensed to Practice.

You are able to manage multiple priorities have excellent organizational skills are a quick learner and demonstrate sound decision-making skills. You are a self-motivated individual who works well independently with minimal supervision.

You have proven and professional communication skills both verbal and written communication skills for dealing with department personnel other government agencies consultants contractors and public.

You have well developed planning and organizational skills coupled with the ability to multi-task and adapt in this fast- paced environment with competing priorities.

Must have experience with structural steel reinforced concrete and timber structural design codes and handbooks. You must have experience using structural/bridge software AutoCAD Microsoft office software suites are essential.

You demonstrate experience in leading and coordinating project teams and experience in public speaking and/or giving formal presentations is a definite asset.

A working knowledge of structural design and analysis with experience and understanding of Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code Department Standard Specifications policies and procedures the Public Highway Act the Motor Vehicle Act the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the associated regulations is considered an asset.

Experience and knowledge of project management techniques consultant procurement practices and agreements tendering processes advanced highway structure design computer applications is considered an asset.

Working Conditions

A majority of your time will be spent in an office environment but site visits will be required during all seasons and various weather conditions on heavily-travelled roads or in rough isolated areas of construction sites.

Additional Information

An Engineer must be Licensed to Practice as determined by Engineers of Nova Scotia (ENS) before being classified as an Engineer 3.
