Job Description

An innovative and rapidly expanding FinTech company is looking for a driven and agile Legal Counsel to support its Japan operations. This is a standalone role, offering autonomy and direct exposure to the business while working closely with global legal and compliance teams across multiple jurisdictions.

Key Responsibilities

Act as the primary legal advisor for the Japan entity, providing strategic and day-to-day legal support to business stakeholders.

Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements including financial services, technology, vendor, and partnership contracts.

Advise on local regulatory and licensing matters, collaborating closely with global teams to ensure cross-border alignment.

Monitor changes in relevant laws and regulations, and proactively manage legal risk.

Support product launch initiatives and operational changes from a legal perspective.

Liaise with external counsel as needed and manage legal vendors effectively.

Requirements

Qualified lawyer in Japan (Bengoshi) or a common law jurisdiction (e.g., UK, US, Australia).

5+ years of post-qualification experience, ideally with a mix of law firm and in-house exposure.

Background in financial services, payments, crypto, or broader FinTech sectors preferred.

Proven ability to work independently while coordinating with cross-border legal functions.

Strong business acumen, adaptability, and the ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

Fluent in Japanese and English (both written and spoken).
