Purpose of Classification:

The City of Sandy Springs is seeking a reliable and enthusiastic Seasonal Ice Rink Attendant to join our team during the winter season. As Ice Rink Attendant, you will be responsible for assisting in the daily operations and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for our ice rink visitors.

Dates : November 17 – January 21 is our ice rink season. Some required availability over the holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Responsibilities:

• Assists with ice rink opening and closing procedures, including scraping and resurfacing ice (no prior experience needed), moving rink-side equipment into place, preparing skates for use.
• Assists with skate shoe rentals and returns them to the skate rack following usage.
• Performs skate sharpening duties that comply with all related safety requirements (training provided).
• Safely operates the ice resurfacer (training provided).
• Assists in crowd control, enforcing rink rules on the ice.
• Maintains cleanliness and order of the ice rink area.
• Assists with general maintenance and upkeep of the ice rink throughout the shift, including scraping and resurfacing of ice.
• Provides high quality customer service and effectively communicates with guests.
• Willingness to perform other duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Available nights, weekends, and some holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and New Years Day.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work in cold temperatures for extended periods.
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
• Ability to recognize problems as they arise and bring them to the attention of Ice Rink Supervisor.
• Ability to adhere to City policies, follow safety guidelines and exercise good judgment in all aspects of responsibility.
• Skating experience is a plus.

Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.

Human Interaction : Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization : Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude : Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude : Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning : Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in critical and/or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.

Physical Ability : Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in light to medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to 50 pounds. Tasks may involve balancing, bending, climbing, crouching, handling, kneeling, reaching, repetitive motion, stooping, walking, and extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Some work is done on a slippery surface.

Sensory Requirements : Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors : Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Requires the ability to work in a cold outdoor environment.
