Job Description

Position Overview:

The Buyer will play a pivotal role in the efficient operation of Fero’s procurement activities. Reporting to the Purchasing Manager, you will leverage your expertise in supply chain and relationship management skills to achieve cost efficiency and high-quality materials and services. This position will work closely with vendors, Project Managers, Production Managers and the Production Planning Coordinator to ensure that all materials, subcontracted services, and equipment are sourced and delivered in a timely manner.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Coordinate purchasing activities for multiple projects with departments following Fero’s guidelines, striving for cost efficiency and on-time delivery.
  • Leverage market research and supplier relationships to drive cost savings and value through strategic negotiation of pricing, contracts, and service agreements.
  • Build and apply in-depth knowledge of construction materials (including steel, lumber, roofing, insulation, windows, and doors) to enhance procurement efficiency and better align material sourcing with production requirements.
  • Create and maintain systems for tracking vendor pricing and performance, increasing productivity and efficiency of the supply chain team.
  • Maintain an active on-floor presence to identify and resolve supply issues before they impact workflow, ensuring materials are delivered on time to meet production schedules.
  • Regularly monitor inventory for quantities, current costs and sales.
  • Identify and resolve shortages or discrepancies, coordinating resolution with internal teams and suppliers to prevent disruptions.
  • Review vendor quotes to ensure they meet all project requirements & specifications.
  • Utilize D365 ERP system to place purchase orders.
  • Resolve delivery and quality concerns, communicating with suppliers regarding orders & shipping schedules.
  • Follow up on all back orders and process returns and maintain record of vendor performance.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the Fero Code of Business Conduct.
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.
  • May perform other duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in purchasing or related supply chain role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present well and influence others when appropriate.
  • Strong negotiation skills with the ability to secure optimal pricing, terms, and value from suppliers.
  • High mental agility and problem-solving skills to identify alternative solutions to procurement needs.
  • Quality and Process improvement mindset.
  • Ability to work autonomously and adjust workloads based on changing priorities.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Availability to work on site to support operational needs.
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of construction manufacturing materials is an asset.
  • Experience in Microsoft Dynamics 365 or SAP preferred.
