Job Description

The Climate and Energy Policy Advisor supports The Nature Conservancy in Maine’s policy and conservation goals by engaging in policy analysis, research, and direct lobbying. They work with the Director of Government Relations in Maine and chapter leadership to develop and advance our policy priorities related to climate and energy issues. As part of the Public Affairs team, they coordinate with conservation staff and build relationships between TNC Maine and state agencies including regulatory bodies, elected officials, the private sector, and non-profit partner organizations. While this position focuses on energy and climate policy in Maine, our work is within the context of the larger region and involves coordinating and strategy design with TNC climate and conservation staff across the northeast and North America.

Duties include working within a highly matrixed organization to execute strategies for advancing organizational policy priorities that integrate climate action with biodiversity/conservation goals and community needs (with a particular focus on those most impacted by climate change and energy transitions). The person in this role will track, engage, and influence state legislative and administrative actions related to renewable energy deployment, energy infrastructure and siting, and climate goals and mitigation plans. Some federal policy work may be involved in coordination with our Director of Government Relations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience or equivalent combination.
Fluency in English.
Experience researching information from divergent sources and compiling it into clear reports.
Experience with legislative, policy, planning, or corporate initiatives at two or more of the following levels: international, national, sub-national/state, or local.
Experience presenting to and communicating with government or corporate staff and/or program leadership.
Experience working with partners/government agencies and the corporate sector.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated.
Experience coordinating thoughtfully about projects in a decentralized organization, working across teams and functions to achieve optimal results.
Familiarity with social, economic, and political conditions and issues in the climate and energy space in Maine and/or the northeast.
An understanding of the connection between climate change and biodiversity and how that relationship manifests itself in climate and energy policy.
Experience negotiating complex agreements and contracts.
Experience building networks or organizational capacity, facilitating informational sessions, increasing internal knowledge and capacity, and identifying key stakeholders.
Outstanding written and oral communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.

Annual Salary Range: $65,000-68,000
