Call for Postdoctoral Research Fellows

at The University of Osaka Graduate School of Medicine

Outline

The University of Osaka Graduate School of Medicine offers postdoctoral research fellow positions (up to 100 positions) to researchers who have difficulty continuing their research activities or joining a laboratory in the United States due to sudden policy changes by the government. We will provide a stable and supportive environment where you can focus on cutting-edge medical research. Applicants interested in this open call should submit required documents shown below to the Personnel section, General Affairs Division of the Graduate School of Medicine. Application Requirements

  1. Postdoctoral researchers who have been engaged in biology and medical research in the U.S. but are no longer able to stay in the U.S., or those who were appointed to join a laboratory in the field of biology and medicine in the U.S. as postdoctoral researchers but are unable to travel to the U.S., due to sudden policy changes by the U.S. government.
  2. In principle, researchers who have obtained (or expect to obtain) a doctoral degree within 10 years as of the date employed by The University of Osaka.
  3. Applicants who wish to be engaged in research as a full-time Specially Appointed Researcher (postdoctoral research fellow) in a main laboratory belonging to the Graduate School of Medicine. No prior approval from the laboratory you wish to belong to is required at the time of application.
  4. Researchers who have an original research concept and are willing to accomplish it.
  5. Applicants who can submit a progress report of their research to the Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine at the timing of the request to be evaluated by the Evaluation Committee.

Term of Employment

One year from the date of appointment. However, there is a possibility of employment for a maximum of three years. There is also a possibility to be a faculty staff, depending on the evaluation.

The maximum cumulative contract term is 10 years from the starting date, based on “Regulations Pertaining to Contract Period of National University Corporation Osaka University Fixed-term Staff, etc.”

Based on “38. Regulations Pertaining to Working Hours, Holidays and Leave for National University Corporation Osaka University Limited Term Staff”

*The Discretionary Labor System, Special Work Type will be applied with the applicant’s consent. (deemed working hours: 8 hours a day)

Salary and Benefits

  1. Based on the “48. Salary Regulations for National University Corporation Osaka University Limited Term Staff (Specially appointed Staff, etc.) Subject to Annual Salary System”, estimated basic annual salary is 5,916,000 yen (Basic Annual Salary Schedule No. 11 (standard)), but it will be determined based on past research achievements and so on.
  2. Commuting allowance: *Bonuses and allowances for housing, dependency, and retirement are included in the above-mentioned annual salary and will not be paid separately.
  3. Travel expenses for postings of the appointed researchers will be paid in accordance with the Travel Expenses Regulations of National University Cooperation of Osaka University up to a maximum of 150,000 yen.

Insurance

Medical insurance and employee’s pension insurance of the Federation of National Public Service Personnel Mutual Aid Associations, Employment Insurance and Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance

  1. Curriculum vitae (any form, written in English or Japanese)
  2. List of publications (any form, list all authors and underline the applicant's name. Place an asterisk to the corresponding author(s). If more than one first author is listed, clearly indicate this. Indicate the most recent impact factor for each publication.
  3. Major original papers (maximum of 3, in PDF format)
  4. Summary of past research (any format, approximately 1000 words in English or 2000 characters in Japanese)
  5. Name of the main laboratory you wish to belong to and a statement of reasons why you wish to be assigned (any form, approximately 500 words in English or 1000 characters in Japanese. Include the research concept you wish to pursue.) If there is another main laboratory you wish to belong to, indicate that name and prepare a statement of reasons separately. Please refer to the following website of the Graduate School of Medicine to see a list of main laboratories. 
  6. A letter of recommendation from the PI of your current laboratory in the United States. Or, if you were planning to travel to the U.S., a letter of recommendation from your current affiliation and a proof of confirmed acceptance at a U.S. research institution are acceptable (each may be submitted in PDF format).

Selection Process

After initial application documents have been reviewed, only shortlisted candidates will be interviewed online by the PI of the laboratory the applicants wish to belong to and may be required to submit additional materials. Please note that applicants who are not selected will not be notified of the results of the selection process.
