Reporting to the Automation & SCADA Supervising Engineer, this position is responsible for creating and implementing Automation & SCADA systems for electrical utility Transmission substations and customer generation facilities. This position will complete all required Automation & SCADA project deliverables including scope and cost estimating, engineering design, equipment configuration development and on-site integration and validation testing with a focus on safety and adherence to ATCO, customer and industry standards and practices. This position will additionally participate in group technical initiatives, innovation pilot projects and identifying areas of cost and quality improvement.

Responsibilities:

  • Specify and design low to medium complexity substation and solar/wind generation SCADA systems including processor-based hardware and software control systems (Gateway, RTU, PLC, Data Concentrators, HMI, Ethernet switches) and integration of Intelligent Electronic Devices (equipment monitors, protective relays, inverters, battery systems, etc.).
  • Develop comprehensive Automation & SCADA packages through all project phases from design specification through to end-to-end commissioning.
  • Complete SCADA equipment device configurations and conduct quality assurance testing at the fabrication facility and onsite during project execution.
  • Contribute to the creation of standards and specifications for Automation & SCADA process, procedure, and equipment.
  • Share project lessons learned and experience to improve overall individual and team product quality.
  • Support project work planning, coordination, reporting, cost estimating, presentation development, quality checks and studies.
  • Ensure project status update reporting is delivered on a regular and frequent basis.
  • Support field maintenance staff in low to medium complexity SCADA and control system troubleshooting, issue investigation and restoration during business hours and afterhours/weekends as required.
  • Participate in new technology investigation and group initiatives to improve team project and operational efficiency, increase project design or execution capability, or reduce cost.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, preferably in Power Systems, Control Systems or Electronics.
  • A registered member of APEGA with P.Eng. designation.
  • Minimum 5 years of electrical engineering experience preferably with time spent in Transmission/Distribution utilities, power generation and/or renewables projects.
  • Experience in electrical engineering detail design & drafting, equipment configuration and site commissioning.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge in SCADA systems, basic IP networking, and substation control system design and control system equipment configuration software for HMI, Gateway, RTU and/or PLC's.
  • Highly effective interpersonal, oral, written, verbal and relationship building skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers.
  • Active team member and ability to prioritize assignments to meet commitments and deliverable deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate technical requirements and make decisions.
  • Problem-solving skills with ability to deal with design issues in a timely fashion.
  • Capability to work on projects independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Conduct site work within the province of Alberta for portions of time through the year.
  • A valid Province of Alberta Class 5 driver's license.
